Pretty much my question. Can I add a 3d model, make it invisible and hide particles behind it? Thanks.

Yes, but its somewhat limited.
You can emit particles from an OBJ as Face, and then set the particles to have stencil mode.
Please load a Preset called ‘Flat’ and use only the Face Emitter / Particle and change it to Stencil.
